CABE Professional Development Services (PDS) will be holding full-day Teacher Institutes at the same time and location as the CABE Parent and Para-Professional Regional Conference at the Hilton Sacramento Arden West in Sacramento on Wednesday, January 25th.
In the past, CABE’s Regional Conferences have focused primarily on parents and para-educators. For the past three years, CABE PDS has been offering full-day institutes for teachers and administrators in conjunction with the Regional Conferences. This year, there will be four separate Teacher Institutes that might be of interest to district and school administrators and teachers in the area.
The Teacher Institutes include:
- “Moving from ‘Knowing About’ to ‘Knowing How’: Integrated ELD Across the Content Areas, TK-12,” presented by CABE PDS consultant Elizabeth Jiménez Salinas, will focus on how to design, develop, and deliver robust Integrated ELD lessons across the content areas, TK-12. Institute participants will work with a structured lesson organizer for determining which language elements to integrate, practice, and apply.
- “Organizing Instruction for Cross-Linguistic Skill Transfer,” presented by CABE PDS consultant Silvia Dorta-Duque de Reyes, will show teachers how they can organize their instruction for cross-linguistic transfer to intentionally and strategically build upon the language assets that students bring with them to the learning of a second language. Teachers will deepen their understanding of cross-linguistic transfer and learn strategies and routines that can be adapted to the different grade levels in any instructional model: Mainstream English, Structured English Immersion, Dual Language Immersion, and Bilingual programs.
- “Dual Language Immersion for New Programs,” presented by CABE PDS consultant Gloria Ramos González, is designed for districts or sites that are considering starting a dual language immersion program. In the institute, Gloria will outline all the important aspects of planning for and establishing a successful and sustainable dual language immersion program.
- “Integrated ELD in NGSS Science and CCSS Math to Meet the CCSS Literacy in Science and the Technical Subjects Standards for Grades 6-12,” presented by Pati DeRobles, has participants examining and exploring Integrated ELD instruction at the secondary level in Common Core State Standards (CCSS) math and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) instruction. Participants will work with lesson resources in secondary math and science that have unique approaches to content-specific concepts from the CCSS and NGSS that support Integrated ELD to build students’ literacy and vocabulary skills in English as well as address the ELD standards, the Standards for Mathematical Practice, and the Science and Engineering Practices.
